What kind
of training and mentoring do lateral associates receive?
Real work for real clients provides our lawyers their most important training. We encourage and expect
associates to work directly with clients and assume significant responsibility as early in their careers as possible.
In addition to the mentoring relationships which form naturally between senior and junior lawyers who work together, new
associates are formally assigned mentors to help them develop professionally.
"Perhaps the most important benefit a large law firm can offer its young associates - maybe even more important than an astronomical salary - is the opportunity to develop mentoring-type relationships with more senior attorneys. Mentoring of young associates is given high priority at Holland & Hart. In my five years here I can honestly say that I have developed mentoring-type relationships with not just one, but six or seven partners who truly care about my career, my development as a lawyer, and my development as a person. The lessons I have learned and the experiences I have gained through my mentors are invaluable."
- Teresa Locke, Partner
We also offer formal training programs. New associates often meet for programs presented by attorneys and staff on the following topics:
- How to write billing descriptions your client can't wait to
pay
- Loss prevention
- New client screening procedures
- The importance of staff relations
- Effective use of paralegals
- Business development for new lawyers
- Partners' expectations and how to satisfy them
- Care of clients
- Public speaking
- The business of law
Our in-house litigation training program is modeled on the National Institute for Trial Advocacy (NITA) program. Partners serve as faculty for intense workshops on opening statements, voir dire, direct examinations, cross examinations, expert witness preparation and presentation and closing arguments.
Computer software classes offered through H&H University help new lawyers take advantage of our cutting-edge
technological capabilities, which are extensive. In a recent poll of mid-level associates conducted by The
American Lawyer, Holland & Hart ranked first nationally in the technology category.

What is Holland & Hart's attitude towards pro bono work?
Our Statement of Principles states our belief in doing pro bono work most succinctly:
"We accept as a guiding principle that this firm has a special obligation to participate in public service activities without expectation of compensation and we expect each lawyer to accept and act upon that principle."
We encourage all lawyers, whether partners or associates, to donate time and professional
services to worthy public causes. It is what's right, and it is good for the community,
the lawyer, and the firm.
